An empty fishing boat washed ashore on a beach earlier today sparked concern for its crew who were eventually found safe and well.

RNLI lifeboats and a rescue helicopter were all tasked to the 18ft cobble that was found at Chapel St Leonards following reports that the vessel was empty.

Rescue teams were stood down after the two crew were found further along the beach.

It later transpired that the boat had capsized while being launched, throwing the crew into the water. They were found wet and cold but otherwise unhurt.

Humber coastguard watch manager Graham Dawson, said: “The crew of this boat were found in time to stand down the major rescue resources we had tasked.

“However, I would like to take this opportunity to request that boat owners remember to contact the coastguard straightaway if this sort of event occurs, to avoid any rescue resources being unnecessarily dispatched.

“I would also like to remind boat operators that during the launch can often be the most treacherous part of any voyage and to ensure lifejackets are worn at this time.”
