A couple whose houseboat went up in flames earlier this year have received almost £3,000 in donations from their community

The owners of a African Queen have been given almost £3,000 in donations from the Dartmouth community after their houseboat went up in flames.

Hilary and Alan Hemsley lost everything after their home was destroyed by fire on the River Dart on March 11.

A fund for the pair, set up by the Darmouth Harbour Authority, was inundated with donations from members of the community, raising a total of £2,987.06.

Speaking to the Torquay Herald Express, Mr and Mrs Hemsley said: “We have been humbled by the community and our friends. Their support and kindness will help us to move forward.

“We would like to say a big thank you to all the emergency services that helped on that harrowing night, to the harbour office for their continuing support, and the response from the South Hams and beyond.”

Following the fire, Captain Rob Giles of the harbour authority offered to set up a special fund for anyone who wanted to help the couple.

“It was a terrible incident for Alan and Hilary, as they lost both their home and business on one traumatic night.

“We felt it was the least we could do as an authority to be the place accept donations given to help them.”

Mr and Mrs Hemsley were presented the cheque yesterday.
